Experience Base – Probabilistic Risk Analysis

Kazarians & Associates, Inc. has its roots in conducting probabilistic risk analyses for nuclear power and chemicals handling facilities.

  • For several nuclear power plants, Dr. Kazarians has conducted probabilistic analysis of specific systems for inclusion in the probabilistic risk analysis. These analyses included reliability data manipulation, and human error probability evaluation.
  • For a nuclear fuel processing plant, Dr. Kazarians conducted a quantitative risk analysis (QRA) focused on hydrofluoric acid handling. The final results were presented in terms of risk contours.
  • Dr. Kazarians managed a major comparative risk analysis of flammable liquids transport through roadway tunnels for the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS). This study included on-site monitoring and statistical analysis of the flammable liquid cargo truck traffic and alternative route selection; risk estimation using accident analysis; and consequence and structural damage assessment for the tunnels as a result of fire and explosion. Special risk matrices were developed to aid the decision makers in evaluating the different elements of the risk.
  • Dr. Kazarians led the effort for the Chemical Manufacturers Association in developing TRACS, a spreadsheet-based quantitative risk assessment tool for transportation of highly hazardous materials.
